Most offices and educational facilities (schools, colleges, universities etc) will have some kind of server equipment on site. This varies from a single PC and monitor up to many racks of switches, UPS, firewalls and other dedicated equipment. We are often asked whether we need to PAT Test server and communications equipment.
Server equipment is generally used in the running of an organisations computer systems and networks. Some companies are wary of having their server equipment PAT tested as the equipment can be temperamental when powering back on. This is common with organisations without onsite IT staff. Completing a full visual and electrical test requires appliances be unplugged and plugged into our equipment to run the tests. This generally means the powering off of the equipment for a few minutes while the test is carried out. With smaller systems (single PC etc) this can generally be arranged with the IT department. This ensures that anyone logged onto the system is logged off and it can be shut down for testing.
Many larger systems have equipment that is ‘dual powered’, meaning that it is powered via two different supplies. This equipment can be tested while in use as only one power supply needs to be disconnected at a time. Even larger server systems often still have some equipment that is single fed and needs to be switched off.
What is the best way to test my server?
